6 Months Old

Wait...hold on...stop!  Six months old??  There is just no way that Hayes can already be six months old.  That's half of a year!!  Let me do the math again - Born in March...April makes one...May is two...June would be three...July is four...August makes five...and September is SIX!!  Wow, I guess that is right!  Any who, my sweet BIG boy (I can't exactly call him little anymore) has had such an eventful month.  (Hence, the bazillion blog posts!)  I feel like each month we master one aspect of our daily life, but this month we have finally been able to put them all together to create one pretty darn successful day!  We wake up about the same time every morning, eat a yummy breakfast of oatmeal and fruit, play, take a good morning nap, run errands or visit with friends, take a long afternoon nap, play some more, wait for daddy to come home outside, play even more, eat a delicious veggie dinner, take a bath and do a dressing change, and go to sleep.  Then, we wake up the next morning and do it all over again!  This may sound rigid and monotonous, but the routine makes for one happy baby...which in turn make a happy mommy and daddy too!  (Oh, and we do stray from the routine sometimes - the plans just have to be extremely necessary, or super fun!!)  Enough about our boring days though, on to the milestones...

• Hayes's communication skills are continuing to blossom!  He is constantly discovering new sounds to make, and he always seems to have something to say - to us, to the cat, to his toys, to the phone, to himself...
• Along with his communication comes lots and lots of socialization.  He is such a flirt and always has a big smile when all of my beautiful (and female!) friends come around.  On the other hand, he has developed quite a bit of stranger anxiety too.  When in an unusual place or surrounded by unfamiliar faces, Hayes gets this very nervous look on his face and clings to my shirt just a little tighter.  This is actually a good thing as it pertains to development and will keep him safe in the future!
• Gross motor skills are something we are always working on!  Just as he masters one skill, it is time to move onto something new on the developmental ladder.  And our current goal - independent sitting!  Right now, he is able to sit for about 30 seconds before toppling over with various limbs swatting at the air around him.  Videos of that to come.
• Another gross motor skill we are working on is bearing weight on his legs.  He loves to hold our hands and stand up tall, so I have begun encouraging him to hold on to other surfaces while standing too.  (I know I will be eating my words once he starts cruising, and I have to put ALL of my stuff away!)
• A child's work is to play...and Hayes is very good at his job!  It seems like he learns how to purposefully play with a new toy almost every day, and this week he has been all about balls.  I have to admit - he has a pretty good throwing arm on him too!
• Another skill Hayes has gotten very good at this month is eating solids, and he thinks everything mommy and daddy eat and drink should be shared with him too.  Animal crackers, water bottles, popsicles...you name it!  I can already tell that he is going to be an eater - which means he will fit right in at the dinner table next to Cody and me!!
